Malvasia - 2020

The Skerk Malvasia wine is crafted from grapes grown in Carso, a region in northwestern Italy with Slavic influences. This area is characterized by limestone-rich soils with iron deposits, as well as rocky and arid terrain. The vineyards, touched by sea breezes, are cultivated without chemicals. During production, the grapes undergo skin-contact maceration and ferment using native yeasts. The wine then ages in barrels at a controlled temperature before bottling, with no filtration or added sulfites. The result is a Malvasia that showcases rich, intense varietal aromas, reflecting the Mediterranean heat, salty winds, and white limestone bedrock. It's a perfect synthesis of terroir and skilled craftsmanship.
This orange wine displays a light yellow color with golden reflections. Its aroma profile is decisive and elegant, featuring fruity notes, citrus hints, balsamic undertones, and Mediterranean herbs. On the palate, it offers satisfying aromatic intensity, pleasant freshness, and an iodized flavor. Skerk Malvasia pairs well with fish dishes or delicate white meats.

  • Climate:August is the hottest month in Carso, with daily high temperatures averaging 82°F (28°C) and lows around 63°F (17°C). In contrast, January is the coldest month, featuring highs of 41°F (5°C) and lows of 31°F (-1°C). • Harvest Technique:In the vineyard, invasive treatments are prohibited, and manual harvesting is employed.
  • Soil:Carso DOC lies on a karst landscape and is subject to all of its vicissitudes: lack of a surface water network, no water retention, and a hard, rocky surface with little to no soil or vegetation.
  • Year Planted/Vine Age:1997 & 2007
  • Fermentation:Natural procedures are preferred in the cellar. The cellar itself is a simple cave carved into the karst rock. As in the vineyard, a minimalist philosophy is pursued regarding the production steps of vinification, aging, and refinement. Human intervention is aimed only at enhancing and amplifying in wines all that the season and the territory have been able to express in the fruit. After spontaneous fermentation (using indigenous yeasts), which takes place with maceration on the skins, the wines undergo a period of maturation before being bottled without ever being filtered or clarified.
  • Elevage:The wines undergo 12 months of maturation in neutral oak and are then bottled without being filtered or clarified.
