About Domaine Musset-Roullier

Gilles Musset and Serge Roullier have been friends since childhood. They were neighbors, who sat next to one another in school in La Pommeraye in southern Anjou, where local lore suggests the area was once home to hundreds of apple trees. Both Gilles and Serge were born to winegrowing families - Serge to a family estate known as Domaine du Pelican established in 1920, while Gilles helped his mother establish Domaine du Chaumier in the early 1980s.

From their first moments in the business, they were always close, careful to share knowledge and support. But when both domaines were heavily damaged by frost in 1991, they began to form plans for a shared project. Upon their parents’ retirement in 1993, the two friends merged their family boutique wine estates and created Domaine Musset-Roullier. Their goal was clear: to express their passion, knowledge, and skills to produce exceptional wines.

Since launching the domaine in 1994, they have grown carefully and deliberately. Today Gilles, Serge and their team farm 25 hectares, devoted mostly to Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc, with small plantings of Chardonnay and Grolleau as well. The soils in this part of Anjou are a combination of silt, sand and clay over schist subsoils. The vineyards are cover-cropped year round with natural grass, beneficial legumes and vegetables are planted between the rows and only the most superficial topsoils are tilled.

The result are vineyards full of microbial life and healthy roots. Replanting is done only with massale selections. The estate is in conversion to organic farming, with certification expected in 2025. The wines that the domaine produces from all this hard work are notable for their freshness in both colors, with lean racy whites and aromatic herbal reds.
