The first wine co-operative created in Kaltern, Alto Adige, established in 1900, Erste e Neue now has some 500 growers contributing grapes from approximately 280 hectares of vineyards. From terraced vineyards that are situated around Lake Kaltern and on the plateau at the foot of the Mendel Mountain, the co-op's members produce premium wines from grapes grown in cru and top quality locations.
At Erste e Neue, the co-op vinifies 13 different grape varieties, including local grapes such as Gewurztraminer, Lagrein and Vernatsch, and international favorites that include Pinot Noir, Cabernet and Merlot. They make a wide variety of wines in both white and red with a touch more emphasis on white wines.
With Gerhard Sanin as the Cellar Master, the winery combines established winemaking traditions with modern cellar technologies, a beautiful combination of the old and new worlds.
