Azienda Agricola Campogrande comes to us by way of Elio Altare, the famed Barolo producer. Altare bought these vineyards in Cinqueterre in late 2000. After completely excavating the land, he replanted the area with indigenous varietals including Bosco (white), and Bonamico & Ciliegiolo (red). The vines are all trained in a Guyot & Pergola system (Elio is the only one in the region who has vines planted in this fashion).
The soil here is a thin layer of sandy topsoil making way to a base of stone and granite that make up the rocky hillsides of Cinqueterre. Harvesting is all by hand, and the vines are planted with optimum exposure to the sea.
Azienda Agricola Campogrande is located in the village of Riomaggiore, on the highest part of the hill called Serra. Cinqueterre is home to some of the steepest vineyards in the world, and it is without a doubt one of the most picturesque.
